  • 5 More Reasons Why Social Media Isn't Working For Your Events

    April 2, 2015 : In our previous blog we shared five reasons why social media might not be working for your events.

    Now here's five more reasons why, and some suggestions on what you can do to make it work.

    1. No One Engages With The Attendees

    No one likes to be left hanging, right? 

    Make sure you monitor the hashtag and your mentions/notifications so you can answer questions, continue the conversation, ReTweet, Favorite and thank attendees for taking part - when others see you interacting, they're more likely to join the conversation and share your messages too!

    2. You Don't Take Time to Prepare

    As the old saying goes; fail to prepare and you prepare to fail.

    Take some time to prepare some social media messages and answers to any likely questions in advance so that you don't have to think on your feet on the day.

    Prepare content in advance

    There's nothing like the feeling of panic when you get writers block and have a million other things vying for your attention - your messages are likely to be uninspiring and ineffective... IF you actually get round to doing any at all.

    Tools like Buffer and Hootsuite are ideal for scheduling across multiple social media channels ahead of time - just make sure you know what's posting and when so you can add value and be timely with your spontaneous posts too! 

    3. You Spam Your Followers

    Buy this! We're great! Listen to us! It's all about us! Buy some more of this! Did you know we're great! We're the best! 

    Your attendees and Followers don't want to be talked AT - they know you're great but no one likes a bighead or people who talk about themselves all the time!

    As with any good social media strategy, whether it's for an event or everyday, make it all about THEM! What can you help them with? How can you make the event more memorable for them or give them tips on getting the most out of the experience.

    4. You Didn't Make Your Social Media Manager Your Best Friend

    Your brand or event social media team can be extremely influential on the success of your event because they already have the relationship with your audience.

    Social Media or Community Managers are also hungry for great content to share with those audiences, so you'll probably be helping them out too!

    Involve them from the very beginning of your event planning process, let them collaborate with you on the hashtag, and then have regular meetings or catch ups with them frequently before the event so they can help build a huge buzz, and as they're usually quite a creative bunch, you may find that they come up with some great promotional or gamification ideas to take your event to the next level.

    Meet with your social media team in advance

    Don't forget to provide them with photo's and details after the event too, especially if they didn't attend in person - they'll keep everyone buzzing for weeks afterwards and biting at the bit to sign up for your next event!

    5. You Don't Review Your Analytics or Reports

    How do you know what did or didn't work well if you don't review your post event reports?

    There are many tools available for measuring and monitoring social media traffic and conversation out there such as Hootsuite and Social Mention, or Twitter's own search/advanced search.

    See which Tweets and responses received the most ReTweets/Shares, Likes and Favorites so that you can provide more of the same type of content and attract more interaction at your next event.

    Make sure you follow up and thank people for taking part of the conversation after the event if you didn't get a chance to during, and don't forget to follow and connect with the most active users at least.
